The recovery of reusable clean water through wastewater treatment is at the top of the global agenda. But what about transforming waste itself into usable resources?

Regarding waste recovery in particular, you may have heard the phrase that landfills are the mines of the future. Yet there is another resource that often remains in the shadows of recycling: wastewater. Generated from our homes, cities, or industrial operations, wastewater is mostly reintroduced into use as clean water or, in the worst-case scenario, discharged into nature without proper treatment.

Another valuable output derived from wastewater—dewatered sludge—is generally not utilized to its full potential. However, composed of valuable components, this sludge can be considered an exceptional source of energy. Harnessing this powerful potential can partially meet raw material demands while minimizing our reliance on depleting natural resources.

Wastewater Is Far More Valuable Than You Think

Beyond clean water recovery, various chemicals and energy sources can also be extracted from wastewater depending on its origin. These outputs are obtained from the sludge (slurry) that has been freed from water—in other words, derived from the dewatering process and stripped of its liquid content. This dewatered sludge, or slurry, contains organic compounds with exceptionally high agricultural value (such as nitrogen, phosphorus, sulfur, magnesium, etc.), as well as microorganisms that play a pivotal role in energy production.

The most critical among these microorganisms are methanogens. Methanogens are organisms that produce the methane gas utilized in biogas generation. Systems designed for biogas production are defined as infrastructure that converts waste into biogas without permitting methane emissions into the atmosphere, subsequently channeling this biogas to ensure highly efficient energy utilization.

Sludge is typically treated prior to recycling to reduce its moisture content. The most common method used for this purpose is dewatering, as mentioned above. Dewatering is predominantly carried out using industrial horizontal centrifuges known as decanters. Decanters are high-performance machines that leverage centrifugal force (G-force) to separate solid and liquid mixtures with differing specific gravities.
